As January comes to a close and we start to cycle out of the winter months, we are left in a transition period where it's not quite warm enough for sun and sandals, but not quite cold enough for styling your heaviest jacket. Since this time of year calls for the clothing that is in between seasons, here is a breakdown of some of the versatile pieces and trends to style for the upcoming months.
Working from the outside in: Layering is a key factor in being able to stay fashionable while not feeling like you have to buy a new garment for every type of weather. Having one in-between jacket as that added piece is all you'll really need to keep up with your daily environment. Whether this is a denim jacket, light trench coat, or leather bomber, being able to put together a fashionable outfit for any weather is easy when layering is done right. This could look like putting a cozy hoodie under your jacket and having the fabric peek out or styling a tank top with a contrasting cardigan to add interest to your warmer weather outfit. Layering can easily be the technique that brings new life to your existing wardrobe and allows you to think outside of the box as you match your outfits to the season we are in.
Buttoned to the top: Another trend that has cycled through the winter seasons and is looking like it is here to stay is a high-neck top or jacket. We have seen the mock neck trend gain extreme popularity through the infamous Parke sweatshirt, but necklines have crept up throughout the winter as a way to keep warm while making a style statement. Throughout this transitory period, you can still keep your necklines high through a high-neck knit tank top or a lighter mesh turtleneck. This neckline allows your facial features to shine and can easily highlight jewelry and accessories by providing a contrasting background. The trend of a high neckline is here to stay; whether it is for a night out, styling with a mini skirt, or running everyday errands with a looser-fitting pant, I think we will see this neckline continue to be styled in new and exciting ways.
Denim in every form: Each year we have seen a particular denim style be the hottest trend, where everyone is wearing one type of jean. We have cycled through wearing strictly high-rise, strictly low-rise, or everyone wanting the classic Levi’s 501 jean. In 2026 we have reached a fashion space where we go through trends so quickly that every denim style seems to be trending in many different aesthetics. This means you can really do no wrong when choosing what types of denim to wear. One go-to style for this season is a bootcut jean. This cut can easily be dressed up or dressed down with any type of boot or round-toe platform shoe. This could be done more casually with Uggs and a sweater or dressed up with a heeled boot and glitzy top. A more unique denim style that is catching attention is a capri jean. The capri jeans are perfect for those warmer weather days when you can pair them with heels or a ballet flat to add interest to an outfit. The capri-style jean might not be for everyone, but it is a way to make a statement with your jeans and proves how you can successfully style any type of denim in the fashion season we are currently in.
The season between winter and spring is an exciting time to play with what's in your closet and get creative while waiting for the official change in season. With the weather being a varying factor that affects our everyday fashion, it can be something to look forward to knowing we are able to utilize different styling approaches on a daily basis.
