“Threads of Heritage”
London Fashion Week, 2024
Tolu Coker set her designs to be reminiscent of the 1970s. Also generating inspiration for the design from her father’s living room. The collection embodies her legacy, her Yoruba culture, and memorabilia from her family’s story. She has a mixture of neutral fall colors with a splash of vibrant pastels highlighted in the collection. Each piece showcased gives luxury, yet a casually strolling through the park feel. The collection allures “Sunday Best”.
A couple of models had accessories, such as an umbrella with the patterned design from the central piece or a symmetrical hat to match color in gown. The collaboration of shapes and textures help to highlight the strength of a legacy and the cultural history each piece represents. Her pieces also provides me signification of the “strength of a woman”.

Sergio Hudson SS 25
“Weapons for Confidence”
South Carolina’s own, Sergio Hudson, presented his Spring/Summer 2025 collection on September 7th at New York Fashion Week. Hudson’s brand focuses on Women’s Ready to Wear, giving women weapons for confidence with pieces like pantsuits and evening gowns. He made his first NYFW debut in September 2020, 4 years after the brand entered the industry.
The 2025 collection is the first time Hudson showcased menswear, with 6 out of 38 looks being menswear. For fabric, Hudson uses silks, sequin, tweed, and even suede. The color palette includes tasteful pastels like Easter pink, blue, yellow, and purple. The golden egg of the collection are the sensual silks which contribute towards the soft tone of the show. Look 26 catches the eye with a long silver silhouette, low v-neck, and a statement belt above the waist to lengthen the legs.
The inspiration for the collection comes from the 1967 film Valley of the Dolls, a story of three women who are struggling to make a name for themselves in the entertainment industry. There are references to the film’s fashion in the pastel colors, sequins, the green double-breasted pencil dress, and the purple purple tube top and pencil skirt set. Ultimately, many of the pieces reflect a modernized 60’s feel, and three of the looks incorporate chunky, geometric bangle bracelets. As fashion evolves and trends come and go, it is nostalgic and refreshing to see old styles with new life. Hudson has an aptitude for decades fashion, with previous collections referencing the 90s, and he will continue to bring us this nostalgia through his creative vision.

Ridgeway South Carolina to New York Fashion Week
Hudson reminds us that our passions, even in cutthroat industries like fashion, are meant to be followed. Hudson is leading the way for other black-owned labels, setting an example of persistence in success. Overall, his style from previous shows to the September show transitioned from upbeat to minimalist and classy. The taste of a few menswear pieces especially indicate that Hudson is entering a new stage of his brand.
